HISTORY OF SMIS

March 5, 1982

Timeline Heading 1

The two Italian sisters, Sr. Loredana Diana and Sr. Clara del Ristoro of the Sisters of Mary Immaculate Congregation (SMI) came to the Philippines to open a new mission in Asia. In June of the same year, Sr. Giuseppina Agostini joined them in the apostolate. The first two years of the Congregation in the Philippines were focused on vocations and formation of those who aspired for religious life.

Timeline Heading 2

In February 1984, the convent was built. The cornerstone was blessed by Rev. Fr. Guido Colleti, OSJ. Upon its completion in May 1985, the edifice was inaugurated by His Excellency Msgr. Pedro N. Bantigue, D.D., Bishop of San Pablo, with the participation of the Congregation’s Mother General, Sr. Evangelina Verga. Since then, the Sisters of Mary Immaculate School (SMIS) became the first educational institution established and owned by the Congregation in the Philippines.

Timeline Heading 3

Recognition and permission to operate the Pre-elementary education was given to SMIS by the Department of Education Culture and Sports (DECS). In this year also the first Filipina sister, Sr. Purita V. Cruz, arrived from Italy to cooperate with the sisters in their apostolate.

A two-Storey building with a concrete structure for 14 classrooms was constructed.

Timeline Heading 5

Due to the great needs and demands from the neighborhood and the growing population, the completion of the school auditorium wherein a total of 51 pupils held their graduation rites for the superiors decided for the expansion of the school. In the construction of the hexagonal building, the actual preschool building was started. Simultaneously, in June of the same year, the Home Economics building was also constructed.

For School Year 1987 – 1988, the number of pupils increased to 444.

Timeline Heading

In School Year 1988 – 1989, the enrolment reached to 574. That year marked the first commencement exercise of 22 pupils in the elementary level.

In April 1989, the elementary level was given Recognition by the DECS. In School Year 1989 – 1990, the total number of enrollees reached to 613. That year marked also the completion of the school auditorium wherein a total of 51 pupils held their graduation rites for the first time. The officiating priest of the Mass and guest speaker was  no   other   than the Bishop of San Pablo, Msgr. Pedro N. Bantigue. Thus, the whole elementary structure was completed in an area of 6,120 sq. m.

In its 5 years of existence, the Sisters of Mary Immaculate School has started to gain appreciation and gratitude from hundreds of families because of the good climate and filial attention given to the pupils and of its outstanding performance as proven by the continuous increase in population Recognitions, especially in academic and arts, was heightened.

The SMIS acknowledges the untiring effort of Mrs. Angelita J. Salamat, the School Principal. She started and managed the school since its initial operation. Thus, her commitment to the school has been of great importance to SMIS history.

Timeline Heading

In June 1994 – using the two classrooms in the Elementary building the Secondary Education started with an initial enrolment of 107 First Year students.In 1998 – the first commencement exercises of 95 students in Secondary Level was held.

Timeline Heading

In June 2016, the school has started the Senior High School Academic Program with Academic Track offering Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS), Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM), General Academic Strand (GAS) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Strand with Computer Programming, Animation, Hardware and Software Servicing under Technical Vocational Track (Tech-Voc).

Timeline Heading

In April 2018, 15 Grade 12 students have successfully completed and complied with the requirements for Senior High School Curriculum, prescribed by the Department of Education (DepED) and by the school.

The “Sisters of Mary Immaculate School” is an institution whose commitment is based on one of the greatest joys of the founder: to receive, to love and to educate the children. 

The Sisters of Mary Immaculate School is named after the Blessed Virgin to whom the founder entrusted the Congregation.
